"Soap in toilets"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as a service user),

I visited Wellhall Medical Centre this morning, my 6 year old son had an appointment with one of the doctor's there.

Both myself and my son used the toilet in the surgery however when we tried to wash our hands there was no soap available in the toilet.

I spoke to a member of staff and made her aware that there was no soap in the toilet for us to use. Her response was "the patients steal it". No apology or effort to get any soap was made. When I pointed out that the NHS encourage good hand hygiene and without soap this is not possible she asked me what do you want me to do? The patients steal it.  Her attitude was very defensive and took me a little by surprise.

As a parent I am trying to encourage my son to always wash his hands thoroughly and especially in a doctor's surgery I feel this is important. I was very disappointed with the attitude of the staff member and feel more of an effort is required to make sure the toilets are up to standard.

Thanks

Dear Fimcd79,

Thank you for getting in touch through Care Opinion to raise such an important issue.

I'm sorry to hear about the circumstances you encountered at the Medical Centre; I can tell you that I have discussed your feedback with the Practice Manager today. The toilets are monitored regularly for cleanliness and supplies, but she recognises that on occasion soap is taken. A wall mounted soap dispenser has been ordered in an effort to overcome this issue as a direct result of your feedback.

GP practices are 'independent contractors' and as such are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about their services directly. Please contact the Practice Manager to discuss your other concerns from your visit. The NHSinform website provides advice your health rights and how to provide feeback to your GP https://www.nhsinform.scot/care-support-and-rights/health-rights/feedback-and-complaints/complain-about-a-gp-pharmacy-dentist-or-hospital-in-scotland

Keep up the good hand hygiene!

Kind regards

Rick
