It's easy to take great care for granted, especially when you've had lots of experience in the system as my family have. We are never anything short of praise and admiration for all the staff at sick kid's. Today's visit was due to a non-blanching rash on our daughters abdomen. This might sound fairly minor, but given that this was the key sign that led to a previous diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), our anxieties were raised that this could be some form of dreadful relapse.
We received the most wonderful care from Dr Rod who was locuming in the ED today. We're sorry we don't know the name of the two nurses but they were equally fantastic. Rod took loads of time to hear our story and to develop a rapport with our daughter before conducting any examinations or tests. I was taken aback that he apologised for not getting blood samples on the first attempt - you were doing you job Rod and if that's what it takes, then so be it. Rod went on to be very reassuring in conducting thorough blood tests which confirmed his initial opinion of this not being any form of relapse. He was also kind enough to liaise with the Haematology team (it's always reassuring to get the opinion from the specialists so we were relived to be visited by Dr Matt. We would have taken your word for it Rod but you added to our reassurance with this "belt and braces" approach.
Many thanks to the RHSC, the ED team and to Dr Rod
"Wonderful care from Edinburgh's RHSC (again)"
