"Recovering from SAH"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Neurosciences (DCN)

(as a service user),

I was admitted at 2am having had a sub arachnoid haemorrhage due to a ruptured aneurysm. I was not able to speak or really understand what was happening to me, and at first I was very scared - particularly hearing the doctor discussing the mortality risk during the process of getting consent from my sister. But from that moment on I felt cared for and supported - from the theatre nurses who took my into surgery, the HDU nurse who sat up with my through the night, the nurse who washed my hair - I was treated with great care and compassion. I would like also to praise the OT team ( Tony) who spent time with me and was able to see beyond my aphasia  - so important as it was very frustrating not to be able to speak! - and Karen who has supported me after discharge. I have been very lucky than thanks to the amazing skill of the doctors at DCN I have made a good recovery and I hope to go back teaching soon. I will never forget my time at DCN and hope that the people who cared for me know how much an impact their work has. Thank you.
