"Nose/Throat Clinic cancelled appointment at..."

What is the point of being referred to this hospital for an appointment with the Nose and Throat Clinic when they can cancel the appointment at short notice?

My nose has been congested for about a year causing hearing loss. In December my GP referred me to this hospital and I booked an appointment for 22nd January.

When I arrived at the hospital I was told that my referral had been rejected on the 18th January.

I had been away from the 18th to 21st so did not receive their recorded delivery letter.

I picked this up from the Post Office on the 23rd and also that day received another letter sent by regular post.

What is their reason for cancellation? I don't know. One letter says that 'following a clinical assessment we are unable to treat you'. The other says my 'provisional appointment cannot be accommodated'. I rang my GP today (25th) and they were unable to advise the reason for cancellation.
