"Having blood taken at outpatients clinic"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Clinical haematology

(as a relative),

My husband had an appointment at the haematology clinic at hairmyres outpatient department. After seeing the doctor he was sent to the blood room to have his bloods done. This has never bothered him before until now.

He was took in by a nurse who tried to get the bloods, but was unsuccessful the first time and tried a second time.   My husband said that it was painful. They shouted for someone else to help and kept pressing on my husbands arm with cotton wool. On removing the cotton wool, his arm became badly swollen and this nurse didn’t even apologise at what they had done. Just commented and laughed and said they've never done that before.

He has been left with pain and swelling since. I think this nurse needs to be sent for more training and to watch how to speak to patients. He is still attending our GP for the swelling which doesn’t seem to be going down. He will not forget this in a hurry.

Dear PHD,

Thank you for your recent post on care opinion.

I can only apologise following your recent visit and was sorry to hear that the nurses had difficulty obtaining blood. I know it can be difficult at times however it sound like there were several attempts. All of our nursing staff strive to do their best for patients however on this occasion the procedure was difficult.

I will certainly speak with the SCN for the department to ensure this is shared with the staff.

I hopre you are now recovering well from your experience.

Kind Regards

Karen
