"daughters recurring nose bleeds."

About: Stonehouse Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Daughter is 9 years old has been advised by ENT nurse practitioner at Stonehouse Hospital Clinic to use an anti-biotic cream for her cluster of nose bleeds and if they don't stop in 15/20 minutes then take to UHW.

Has had her third nose bleed this week at school. The school called as it had been bleeding for 40 minutes therefore I collected her and took her to minor injuries at UHW. Receptionist advised that she would not be seen by a Doctor, I re-iterated that I was following ENT protcol. It eventually stopped whilst waiting to be triaged. Nurse as well as receptionist queried whom had advised me to bring her to minor injuries. This was asked in a dimissive manner. Both implied by their tone of voice and body language and choice of vocabulary in their questioning that they did not think I should have brought her to the M.I. clinic. It clearly states on the NHS website to follow the above advice regarding attending A & E if the nose bleed exceeds 20 minutes, which the school adhered to as well as myself.

After waiting several hours I made the decision to take her home as it was clear she was ok by this point and A & E was busy. I do  understand the pressures the NHS are under and also that she did not merit immediate treatment, however I feel this advise should be reviewed by ENT and the NHS website if it cannot be followed up. Meantime my daughter continues with her nosebleed.

Dear pepsicola04

I’m sorry to read of the conflicting information that you received during your daughters visit to ED.

Firstly it may not have been made clear to you that this was not a minor injury and depending on her triage category may not have required a consultation with a Dr. I’m sorry this was not properly explained to you.

In terms of your actions you are absolutely right that if a nose bleed does not stop within 20 minutes then further advice or treatment should be sought.

I will ensure this information is shared with the clinical team.

I am glad to hear that it did eventually stop and hope she is feeling better.

Best wishes

Andy

Dear Andy

Thank you for your response, however it is clear to me that my daughters recurring nose bleeds are not viewed as a minor injury. It states on the NHS webiste to seek medical advice from A & E. Which I did. She was triaged, I did not expect treatment from a DR, but did expect a nurse practitioner to treat my daughter (as a minor remedy) and to be treated with respect and compliance from your staff, not for reception staff to have an opinion on whether she required treatment or not.

Dear pepsicola04,

I am sorry I have not been clear with my reply. Depending on your duaughters clinical assessment, observations and the triage category given would have determined whether she would have had to be seen by a Dr or indeed a major illness advanced nurse practitioner as a nose bleed can be a medical emergency and in some cases has to be seen urgently.

This posing has been shared with the team including reception staff and once again would apologise that you have a negative experience.

I hope this explains and clarifies this. If not I’m happy to have a chat with you and can be contacted on 01698 361100 if you ask for my PA Tracey Murtagh and she will arrange a suitable time to speak to you as I am on annual leave until the 7 th Feb.

Best wishes

Amdy
