"Neurosurgery for hydrocephalus"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Neurology (Brain, Spinal and Nerves)

(as a service user),

In 2015-16 I spent 2 months on ward 205 in ARI, having been admitted as an emergency.  I was barely conscious and scared, it was a frightening experience particularly for my husband and teenage daughter too.

In the weeks that followed, the medical care I received under consultant Mr Bodkin was exceptional and I will be grateful for the rest of my days!  Where many professionals in previous years had ignored me or scratched their heads, he knew exactly what to do, to replace my tired elderly shunt (1976). He was clear, filled me with reassurance, and kind as well as humorous during frightening times.  His skill and that of the neuro team at ARI saved my life.

The hospital staff were also wonderful, supportive, kind people, with time and comfort when needed, from the phlebotomist (takes blood) to the general ward staff bringing breakfast each day.  Nurses were kind and gave the impression of having time to give, even though they were under pressure.

The hospital has an art gallery, Café & chaplain, all part of making a long stay as comforting and homely as possible.

Thank you ARI ♥️

Hi there

Thank you for taking the time to respond regarding your hospital care in ARI. I am delighted that you were well looked after. We aim to treat each patient as an individual and I am so pleased we were able to help you.

I regularly meet with Mr Bodkin so I will pass on this message to him. I will also contact the ward teams as they too, will be delighted to hear that their hard work and dedication has made a difference.

I wish you well in your recovery and thank you again for your feedback

Kind regards

Sean Berryman (Unit Operational Manager)
