"radical prostatectomy"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Urology (Ward 11c)

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Feb 2018 after the usual investigations were carried out. First point to note. I was on tamsulosin for over 4 years but no recall to my local surgery to see if things were same or worse etc. It was by having a blood test  for an unrelated problem that my raised psa was noticed.

Having talked with 2 consultants the decision was made to remove prostate. When asked if I had any questions I told consultant at NSGH that I was concerned about going on holiday and being incontinent. The reply was to have my holiday then retire in July and return for operation as the cancer was contained in my prostate and there was no urgency I was assured.

Had my operation in October. Stay in hospital wasn't bad but not great either. I asked my nurse in the morning if I could have the 2 canulas in the back of my hands removed and this no problem they just had to do their round. 4 hours later I asked again and it was obvious I had been forgotten about. In the bedside locker there was someone else's clothes still there.

On returning to hospital to receive the biopsy results was told that some cells had escaped at the basel area at my bladder and further treatment would be required, this in spite of being reassured that the cancer was contained within my prostate.   I then asked the specialist nurse about medication as reading the information leaflet I believed I should be on a form of Viagra to assist with healing, who was astonished to learn I wasn't on it and stated the ward had let me down.

They obtained a hand written instruction from a specialist surgeon to take to my local practice for the medication, this I did on the Monday and collected the tablets same day only to find they administered the wrong tablets. I was also meant to be emailed information on how to proceed regarding physiotherapy, this email wasn't forwarded on to me so all in all not the greatest of experiences, at this point awaiting consultation to discuss way forward.
