"Response to Car Accident"

About: Borders General Practices Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

Recently my wife and I collided with another vehicle, on the road between Kelso and Jedburgh, just outside Heiton on the Jedburgh side. We are both 84 years old and were very shaken up - our car was a 'write-off'. A nursing sister from the Selkirk practice drove past - turned around and came to our aid. She quickly assessed the situation; examined both of us and offered to drive us to Kelso Cottage Hospital for further assessment. She also said the Police should be notified. The other driver disagreed but - acting with great foresight - Sister 'Claire' 'phoned the Police, and the Ambulance service. She said we should wait, and she would wait with us, until the ambulance arrived. They would assess us and probably take us on to the Borders GH. The ambulance with Susanne and David (? ) arrived all the way from Chirnside in very short time - Claire attentively staying by us. After a discussion and preliminary examination we were loaded into the back of the ambulance and Sister Claire went on her way - inadequately thanked by us two for all she had done. (The Police arrived - (two vehicles) meanwhile and busied themselves with taking statements and controlling traffic flow on this very busy road). After a very thorough examination the Para-Medics decided there was little reason to go on to the BGH UNLESS we felt it necessary. We declined at which point the Police, who had waited for the outcome - having supervised the recovery vehicle from Thomson's in Galashiels - said they would take us home. We live outside Cornhill on Tweed - very much out of their way - but they insisted and did just that. We are still in some pain but having been well advised and assured by the Para-Medics we know we have been well cared for. We were home by 1500 hrs. Claire, susanne, David, Police Scotland cannot be praised nor thanked highly enough and we are very, very grateful for all you do for us. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your story with us, I am sorry to hear you had such a traumatic accident and hope that both you and your wife are recovering well at home. An experience such as this can be a very frightening and confusing time and so I was delighted to read that one of our nurses Claire attended to you both so well in the initial stages after the accident and you felt in such safe hands. Claires manager will ensure that Claire has the feedback and thanks from yourself in recognition of her care and it is reassuring to know that all the emergency services coordinate together so well at these times.

I wish you both a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,

Caroline Burgess- Clinical Nurse Manager.

Dear Father John,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your feedback on Care Opinion. I am very sorry to read that you had such a traumatic event. As Caroline says it can be very frightening being in a car accident, particularly when there is a difference in opinion surrounding the actions that should be followed post incident. I am however, really pleased to hear about the nurse Claire, what a lovely thing to do. Also I am pleased to hear that the care you received by all, including our crew, was of a standard that has left an impression like this.

I hope that you and your wife are on the road to a full recovery and the process surrounding the write off of your car is simple and efficient.

Kind Regards and thank you again

Alan

Thank you Alan - and particularly for your best wishes for the days ahead. Slogging through all the drama with the insurance people - including the long waiting times for any information - is as traumatic as the accident itself! Gratefully. Father John.
