"My son who is type 1 diabetic"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Endocrinology and Diabetes Crosshouse Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My 8 year old child has been ill for a few weeks with viral infections and colds and sickness bugs through out December. He is type 1 diabetic so it’s far more difficult to treat any illness when having to fast him due to sickness whilst needing insulin. We always manage but tonight his temp suddenly hit 40.2. No warning....he developed ketones, but his blood sugars were normal. I had done everything I knew to bring them down, but I was worried.

I checked the Ayrshire children’s diabetes app for advice which is an amazing app and I called the children’s ward just to get advice. I spoke with one of the doctors her name was Carolyn (not sure of spelling) she was full of kindness and praise for me as a mum. Not only did she tell me I was doing everything right but she called me a superstar. Doing 2 hourly checks through out the night is very difficult but it’s something that needs to be done when he is sick and not something I ever think I never want to do.  To hear her kind words and encouragement just made me feel like....I was doing a good job. When he is so sick all the time and I can’t fix it for him just makes me feel hopeless so I wanted to write this to let her know that what she said means a lot to me. More than she will ever know Infact. So I want to thank her. I hope she gets to see this compliment.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Mum of a diabetic,

Well I understand why she called you a superstar. It is difficult as a Image titlemum to a sick child, but looking after your child with Type 1 diabetes adds a more complex and difficult dimension.

It is important to everyone to get support and positive feedback and I am glad you found Carolyn to be so helpful in all the ways you outlined. I am sure Carolyn will appreciate this this lovely feedback and will no doubt be delighted when she receives it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your kind words.

I hope all is well now and you have caught up with your sleep.

Best wishes to you all for 2019,

Eunice

Update posted by Mum of a diabetic (a parent/guardian)

Thank you kindly for your response Eunice. I don’t think I will ever catch up on my sleep living with a child with type 1 but I can honestly say that those kind words from Carolyn was enough to keep me going when I felt hopeless. There are a lot of days like that but on that particular evening when I called the ward feeling like a rubbish mum but knowing I had done everything I possibly could... maybe it was the sound in my voice or she just knew I was low... she did more than her job for me. A few words was all it took and I can’t thank her enough. So by giving this feedback I hope these words can do for her what hers did for me.

I never cease to be humbled by the kindness of people, Mum of a diabetic.

I am sure you will have made a huge impact on Carolyn by feeding back in such a lovely way. If only we could bottle kindness and compassion, then share, we would be the richest possible. Perhaps the next best thing is sharing it on CO. Thank you,

Eunice

p.s. you sound a great mum
