"First class treatment for mum"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a relative),

I am my mums full time carer

After coming from the receiving ward  ( not having a great experience and will be posted about in another post ) to ward 9 upon arrival the staff, service and ward were second to none !

I had already stayed with my mum for 3 nights on a hard back chair , by this time sore, tired and exhausted and as soon as I arrived I was basically welcomed with open arms , which to a carer is a major thing .
Straight away I was offered a recliner chair , even as much as tea, coffee , water and if there was anything they could help with not to hesitate to ask . The difference that made to me and to actually get some sleep made a huge difference .
I’m not sure if ward 9 was aware of “johns campaign” or not but I certainly Didnt once feel  I had to explain it !

Even how they treated my mum was first class, they actually treated her like a person not another number , as my mother is terrified of hospitals and becomes very anxious but again their nursing skills put her at ease straight away and can honestly say if it wasn’t for the staff doing this my job would have been a lot more difficult having to calm her down.
I have now been in a few wards in Hairmyres hospital and nothing comes close to how ward 9 actually operate.
I’d personally like to thank all the staff that cared for not only my mum but  for me as well in particular Drew ( staff nurse ) and there was an Irish girl I’m sure her name was Kate who was the nicest nurse I’ve ever came across.  All of the nurses were fab I just can’t remember there names .
The staff in particular from Doctors, nurses , auxiliaries, domestics are a credit to Hairmyres hospital.
Some nurses should go and work up there for a day and take a leaf out of their book !!

Dear Allk101

Thank you for taking the time to post on the care opinion website, we value all feedback and use this to measure the care our staff provides. I am delighted to learn that you and your mum received a service you describe as second to none. John’s campaign is ingrained in the ward philosophy and the team in ward 9 use this to help drive person centred care. I know the whole team in ward 9 and especially Drew will be very happy to hear they have contributed positively to your mum’s journey.

If you would like to discuss this experience or indeed the other ward which your mum stayed in please contact our patient affairs department on 01355 594325 and my colleagues there will facilitate this easily for you, as I mentioned earlier all feedback is important and we use all situations to learn and help develop our teams.

Kind Regards

Kirsty
