"Emergency admission with a Myasthenia Gravis crisis"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I went to an out patients appointment at the neurology department with worrying symptoms of being unable to swallow, major weight loss and slurred speech. I was diagnosed on the spot with Myasthenia Gravis and told I needed to go  straight into hospital. I was told to book in through A & E and I would be given a bed and they are aware I was coming.

I went into A & E around 2 hours later and they were unaware of me. I was having trouble talking so it was very difficult to explain myself. After a lot of running around by them and around an hour later they found out I was expected and I moved onto an admission ward. I was there for one night. Moved to a second ward where I was for 1 night and then moved again to another ward where I was in one bay for 2 nights and then moved into another bay (quieter bay) where I stayed until discharge.

Staff where generally nice the only issue I had was my IVIG was given late at night and going into the early hours of the morning to fit in with their staff changes. This was very annoying and I asked for it to be done during the day but they said they were to bust to do it. This used to get me very annoyed as I was kept awake until 2 or 3 am sometimes.

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry that your experience wasn't entirely positive. We would be very glad to feed back to the ward sister and matron about the lateness of the IVIG but we would need to know which ward you were being cared for on.

If you would like us to share your feedback please do contact our PALS team with the information. They can be contacted on 01634 825004 or medwayft.pals@nhs.net

Kindest regards

The Patient Experience Team

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

We were sorry to read that it became necessary for you to be admitted following your recent neurology out-patient appointment and that it took some time for you to be admitted, but hope that you are now making a good recovery.

We do understand how frustrating it can be for our patients when encountering ward moves and we were also sorry to read that your sleep was disturbed due to the timing of your IVIG.

We would encourage you to contact the PALS team at mtw-tr.palsoffice@nhs.net, where your concerns can be thoroughly looked into and you can be provided with feedback from this.

We look forward to hearing from you and once again thank you for taking time to provide us with feedback.

Our patients feedback is very important to us and helps to improve the services provided by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

With kind regards.

The PALS Team.

Maidstone Hospital - I have no idea why it has said Maidstone Hospital as I only stated Medway Hospital. I never attended Maidstone Hospital.
