"Cardiology Care"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Cardiology South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust Vocare

(as a service user),

Written by Healthwatch Cornwall on behalf of the story provider:

Patient suffered a heart attack in mid November. They first contacted 111 who were very good on the telephone and asked about complaints (pain in shoulder/neck). Four years ago the patient had angina and was given treatment in the form of tablets as their arteries were too small to have stents. When had the recent heart attack was advised by 111 to take four aspirins before the ambulance arrived; this removed the pain.

Within 30 mins an ambulance crew arrived and checked the patient out and advised should then go by ambulance to Treliske for a blood test. The blood test confirmed a heart attack and the patient was kept in hospital for an angiogram (undertaken). Patient said the treatment was speedy and that he couldn't find a fault with the hospital - all checks were very professional. Patient currently needs a bypass as stents cannot be put in for the same reason as four years ago.

The patient is now wishing they had had a bypass earlier. The patient is now more understanding of the symptoms, as what previously seemed to him to be indigestion pain, they now realise is connected to their heart condition. The patient has been in hospital for eight days and is hoping to hear today where the nearest hospital is for a bypass.

The patient said that the ward was brilliant (Roskear) with camaraderie and that they were looked after very well. Had been moved three times during his stay. The patient did say that the toilets on B Bay (CIU) could be cleaner. Overall though, they said that communication was good and that the staff explained what will happen next. One thing the patient feels should have been raised sooner was nicotine relief, given that they had been a smoker for years.

Dear dearjohn,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here. I was glad to see that the treatment you received in our emergency department was quick and professional. I am pleased that you have been well looked after on Roskear ward here at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, and although having been moved a few times, the communication has been good and the staff explained what was happening.

I am replying to you as a member of the Patient and Family Experience team, but I will ensure I share your story with the relevant people including our colleagues in Mitie with regards to the cleanliness of the toilets in B Bay on CIU.

Best wishes,

Jess
