"Sudden loss of hearing"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Audiology Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter lost her in left ear 3 years ago suddenly. She had several GP and ENT appointments to try courses of steroids and various hearing tests to see if this medication would help but no. No hearing aid was offered as she had good hearing in her other ear and she accepted this and learned to adapt.

Fast forward to 2018 and a few months ago she noted her hearing in her good ear was worsening.   Finally GP referred us to ENT where she had hearing tests and was given one course of steroids and an MRI scan to follow. Unlike last time she was offered no follow up ENT appointment to check if the steroids worked or to get more.

She had the scan and waited on results. Twice in recent weeks the appointment was cancelled at a couple days notice and the earliest offered was Xmas week. Feeling this was too long to wait, and bearing in mind she's only 22, deaf in one ear and halfway deaf in other I phoned ENT to find out what's happening and could we get an early appointment to be rather rudely told there was nothing they could do take it up with outpatients whom kindly brought her appointment to last week.

At said appointment tests were done and consultant told us no-one should live with that amount of hearing loss and an urgent referral for hearing aids would be sent over. We phoned audiology and the only appointment is a follow up for 2019 and were advised to phone ENT. A member of ENT staff is off but person we spoke to looked up on system and we are now told the letter on the system says we already have hearing aids and are going in 2019 for follow up and we need to wait 'til ENT staff member comes back. So my daughter has no idea what's happening, is struggling to hear and is left in limbo.
