"Feeling unwell while visiting from England"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency Forth Valley Royal Hospital / GP Out of Hours General practices in Forth Valley

(as the patient),

While staying with friends in the area I became unwell with a UTI, I tried to deal with it as advised on the NHS website, however after 4 days it still wasn't gone and I was feeling unwell.  I went to to Westburn medical centre in the afternoon this week as that was where my friends are registed. I explained to receptionist that I was visiting the area from England, I had a UTI which I'd had before. I was told I needed to go to a pharmacist. Again I stated my case, however clearly these were the rules... I was feeling unwell and I left somewhat grumpily. I went to a pharmacy in Camelon where the pharmacists was extremely kind and helpful. I'm not a Scottish patient therefore they could use the pharmacy first system. They wrote a note saying I MUST be seen today. I have a complex medical history. I returned to the medical centre where i was informed that i could not get an appointment until the next day as all patients must be triaged between 9am and 11am. Receptionist stated they would have told me that if I had not left the building... I left the building because I was told I needed to see a pharmacist.

I was then in a situation where I was forced to A&E. I was feeling unwell I needed antibiotics for a UTI.  I travelled to Forth Valley A&E. The receptionist was very helpful but explained there was very long waits (4 hours) due to paediatric emergency and perhaps I should wait until 18.00 and use Out of Hours GP.  I was unsure of this as I'm not a Scottish patient . Anyway I booked in, was traiaged Nurse suggested I call out of hours at 18.00. I waited at A&E until 18.00m called out of hours and finally at 18.45 saw a GP who prescribed me antibiotics within 5 minutes I was on my way home.

Dear Bella 91,

it sounds like you had a struggle finding the right person to advise then provide treatment. I am sorry this was not straight forward for you and hope you are now feeling better.

your comments are appreciated and will be shared with staff.
