"Neglect of patients by not providing care to mobilise"

About: Newquay Community Hospital West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance) / Older people's healthcare

(as a friend),

In the last few month the husbands of two of my friends have been admitted to hospital with serious problems but were treated successfully. Unfortunately for whatever reason their mobility or rehabilitation was neglected. Sadly it is far easier and far less time consuming to use lifting and handling aids than to spend time encouraging elderly and sometimes frail elderly patients to remain mobile or regain their mobility and keep the ability to be self caring.

Very short sighted as their mobility quickly becomes compromised and they are no longer able to care for themselves, they will require a significant care package to return home or worse case scenario, as has happened in my friends cases, need residential care as the are considered to be at too high as risk to return home. I feel that lives are being ruined, the lives of patients and their families who are forced to become carers, with all that entails,  also it can have a catastrophic affect on their finances as the cost of care is astronomical.

Being immobilised also increases the of tissue degeneration and pressure sores.

Dear Anonymous,

Many thanks for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I am responding to you in my capacity as the Hospital Manager at West Cornwall Hospital.

It is extremely important for me to hear the stories of our service users and to share these experiences with the staff who are delivering care every day to the people of Cornwall.

Hearing these stories enables us to learn from these experiences, both good and bad and to improve on the care we deliver.

We absolutely strive to offer the best possible care and to ensure we maintain independence within our patients to enable them to return to their home environment, with the least impact on their health and wellbeing.

The Hospital were recently recognised nationally for their participation in the End PJ Paralysis campaign, which activity encouraged patients to be mobile, whilst in Hospital, to promote their independence.

Staff continually promote independence in our patients by escorting them to the bathroom and use walking aids, provided by our Therapy teams, to assist them.

I do hope my response has gone some way to offer you assurance that the Ward Teams take patient mobility and independence very seriously.

I will certainly share your comments with the ward staff.

With very kind regards,

Paul
