"Two very different levels of care"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU) Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care

(as the patient),

After a stay in Crosshouse hospital a little while back I experienced two very different levels of care.

To start off in CAU I was let down by the lack of compassion and understanding from the staff (on exception of a specific few). As I was a young patient I was left to fend for myself, even whilst on bedrest. On one occasion I had the room door opened and 2 towels thrown in, however due to my condition I was currently unable to stand for long spells of time therefore the option of a shower was not there. All I looked for was a bit of compassion and for someone to set up a basin beside my bed and I would have managed the rest myself. Not really to much to ask for? I also felt judged everytime when asking for pain relieve and questioned if I really needed morphine. This I felt inappropriate as I never take as much as paracetamol however this pain was unbearable. Another area I was not happy regarding was the lack of question's asked for my admission booklet, all that I got asked was who my NOK was? no PMH, no skin concerns nothing.

However after I was transferred to ward 3E my care greatly improved. On arrival to te ward two very kind aux nurses set me up a basin and allowed me the privacy to wash alone before coming in to assist with washing my hair. A job this simple really cheered myself up and improved my mood as I had now been in 5 days. All members of staff could not have done enough for me, nothing was to much hassle and I never once felt judge and for that I cannot that the staff of Ward 3E more. The care here really was except exceptional. After 11 days I was finally allowed home and thanks to the staff who took the time to comfort my whilst I was upset, listen to my moans and helped with my pain control and getting me to theatre I will be forever greatful.

Dear xoxox,

Thanks for taking the time to post on care opinion. What a difficult time this must have been for you and your family. As well all the monitoring and technical aspects of care it is equally important that staff are caring and compassionate. Simple things like washing our hair we take for granted until we become unwell. It is great to hear the nursing assistants supported you with this. I can imagine how this in itself would make you feel a little better.

It is great to hear that all of the staff in 3e provided you with support and exceptional care at a real difficult time. Pain is such a master of us and I am glad that your pain was controlled and that staff listened to you.

I will ensure your feedback is shared with the team. They will very much appreciate this. After 11 days in hospital it would be good to get home.

Best wishes,

Christine
