"Life Changing Surgery!!"

About: Kettering General Hospital / Gastroenterology Kettering General Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had a planned ileostomy at Kettering General Hospital. I went in at 7am, and waited for around 45 minutes before being called. At this stage my husband was told to leave, I would have preferred for him to stay until I had to go into surgery.

The surgery took slightly longer than expected and my husband was calling the ward to see if I had returned from surgery only to be told not yet but no further information was given, causing unnecessary stress.

I was brought back to the ward, which was very noisey at all times of the day.

The support from the stoma nurse was amazing and very reassuring, the surgeon came to see me everyday and answered any concerns, the surgery was a success and having a major operation done laparoscopically made recovery easier.

I was moved to a quieter ward as I became more independent and I appreciated the move as it enabled me to get more rest and resulted in me going home earlier.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for taking time to provide your feedback on your experience.

We are sorry to read that your surgery went on for longer than anticipated, and having spoken with the staff on the unit, from what you have described, we would presume you would have been sent to Deene B ward after your operation. With this, the unit prior to your operation should have given your husband the details of this ward to contact them on. If you would like to discuss this further or would like this to be investigated further, please do not hesitate to get in contact with PALS on 01536 493305 or via email at pals@kgh.nhs.uk and the team will be happy to help.

The stoma nurses would like to thank you for taking the time to leave these kind comments regarding the nurse caring for your after your surgery. They are delighted that you found that the stoma care team and the surgeon were able to provide you with the support and aftercare you needed.

We are pleased to read that you had a speedy recovery, and hope that you are doing well now.

Kind regards

Charlotte and The Patient Experience Team.
