"Chaotic reception"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a carer),

My wife attended a routine out patients appointment in orthopaedic department. However the waiting area doubles up as a waiting area for A&E.

My wife felt overwhelmed seeing distressed patients and carers awaiting triage at the A&E. Patients with hand wounds, sick and SAS personnel in and out during the wait to be taken to Orthopaedics.

Dear Basil,

I am sorry that your wife was distressed by the emergency presentations that would have been waiting to be seen within the Emergency Department while waiting on a routine orthopaedic appointment,

You are correct in saying that the clinic and ED share the same waiting area and it can be over whelming for clinic and also ED patients who perhaps are waiting and may see patients as they wait to have emergency treatment.

The nurse coordinator within ED attempts to place patients waiting for emergency treatment within a cubicle area in the main department as soon as they can however sometimes this can be challenging for us particularly if there is a surge of presentations to the Emergency Department and also the ortho clinics can also be extremely busy.

I would like to once again apologise for any distress that was caused.

Best wishes

Andy
