I was recently admitted to hospital for the first time in my life. I was in severe pain and throwing up. I spend 2 days in the ward. I am writing this to congratulate the staff on the care I received, I was terrified at being an inpatient and many staff members helped put my mind at ease and feel safe.
One healthcare assistant really stood out to me and I would love for her to be recognised for her caring nature and ability to make the extraordinary event of being in the hospital feel normal and safe, I wish I could remember her name however due to being unwell I can not. I was also looked after by a male staff nurse ( I believe his name was Stephen? ), his humour made my stay that much better and was also compassionate when he needed to be.
The one downside to my stay was that I was on a fluid balance sheet, which meant I had to urinate in a bedpan for the staff to measure it. This information was relayed to me, however, I was not told what to do with the bedpan after using it, I, therefore, brought it to my bedside. I was in bed during the night when a healthcare assistant approached me and asked what was in the bedpan, I explained I didn't know what to do with it and they snapped at me that I should have put my name on it and left it in the toilet, at this point I asked how I put my name on it as I hadn't been told, my questions were ignored and at this point they noticed a half eaten cookie on my table. They again snapped at me "have you been eating? ! " (I was on a clear fluid restriction), when I explained that my wife had left it they rolled their eyes and walked away from me. This left me feeling confused and angry.
Overall I received great care however it was shadowed by the attitude of that one healthcare assistant.
"Fantastic compassionate care"
