"Deals with the problems effectively with lasting results"

About: Community mental health services / Recovery College

(as a service user),

I attended the Recovery College as I was suffering from Depression & Anxiety.  It certainly was an education as I was taught how to recognise the trigger points that were causing my mental illness & subsequently learnt how to avoid these by changing the way that I thought about things.  This has enabled me to control my illness & eventually recover to a normal relaxed state of mind.  My only one constructive criticism is that I felt that there was a little too much small talk at the start of each session which sometimes resulted in the class not being able to cover the last part of the paperwork that we were given.  Overall though I thought that the tutors were very good at communicating with the students and deliberately did not put them under any pressure.  I felt that this was very important, given how mentally fragile some of the students were, and demonstrated good standard of professionalism.  It was interesting to note that the students were from a whole range of different backgrounds and given the colleges broad range of subjects, there seems to be a course to suit everyone.  Although appropriate medication may make  us feel better it is not a cure,  so I would highly recommend the Recovery College as this deals with the problems far more effectively with lasting results.

Dear Sketch

My name is Farai and I am the Engagement & Experience Co-ordinator for the Trust.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story about your experiences at the Recovery College. I am glad that you have learnt skills that will enable you to control your illness and help you on the road to Recovery.

As you have mentioned the Recovery College caters for a wide range of students and I am sorry that you felt that the small talk at the beginning of each session meant you weren't able to complete all of the course work that was given. However, some of the students in these classes have not been heard before and it would be risky cutting someone off whilst they are trying to express themselves. The trainers have discussions about boundaries but I hope you can appreciate that it is hard for them to find the right line and are very good at allowing people to feel heard and ensuring the course content is covered. Please be assure though that this comment had been passed onto the Recovery College manager to ensure that they continue to meet the right balance for all students.

Thank you for endorsing the Recovery College and I wish you all the best on your recovery journey.

Kind regards

Farai
