"Malignant melanoma"

About: Victoria Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

A mole on the sole of my foot concerned my wife. Decided to visit my GP & from there it was quick & straight forward.

My GP made an urgent referral to the Dermatology Dept at Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy where they diagnosed a malignant melanoma. From there it was a referral to the the Plastic Surgery team based at Nine Wells Hospital where Mr. Waterstones operated to remove the cancer and place a skin graft in place. 5 days in hospital followed by weekly visits to have the dressing changed by the Plastic Surgery nurses.

Now healing well, back walking freely & have had final consultation with Mr. Waterstones who told me lab reports on the sentinel node biopsy was clear as was the tissue from my foot.

Can't praise the staff involved enough at every stage of my treatment.

Thank you all.

A big Well Done to your wife, it may have taken you a while to notice this on your own.

There has been a lot of change in the treatment of melanoma in recent times and you will be followed up for quite some time depending on the original bi-opsy results.

Should you ever feel anxious about the diagnosis please be in touch and we will provide support for you close to home. We are a patient support group - patients who are on or have completed this journey -helping patients with in-put from clinicians who advise us.

Best wishes for your speedy recovery,

Leigh

Dear Lago,

On behalf of Mr Waterston and the Plastic Surgery nurses, I would like to thank you for your kind comments, which I will feedback to the team.

I am glad that we were able to perform your Plastic Surgery operation promptly and Caroline, our link nurse, will have played an important part in ensuring that this was the case.

Attending our clinics for regular dressings can be tiresome, but it sounds like you are beginning to make progress, which I hope will continue.

Please continue to ask questions and stay in touch with your named link nurses in both Dermatology and Plastic Surgery during your ongoing monitoring period. They will provide you with any further information you may require.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

Kind regards

Lynn

Update posted by Lago (the patient)

Thanks Lynn,

Can I just say that attending the dressing sessions was actually reassuring as the nurses were always explaining the healing process & were totally positive in respect to my situation.
