"Congentital heart disease appointment..."

About: Derriford Hospital / Cardiology

I am a mother of a son who has congenital heart disease, he has had many open heart operations and the last being in 2013 at Southampton hospital for Aortic root sparing. He was then transferred to adult care at Derriford hospital. Since the transfer, initially a first good hand-over.

However, he has had 2 reviews with the Plymouth team, we have had no feed-back apart from one which said he was doing well and the echo was fine, which was strange as he did not have one at that time as they had run out of time.

We eventually got one and no results were sent to us, hence the 2 reviews that were not carried out with properly in my opinion.

We were told he needs yearly check-ups as he has always had.

But we are still waiting and even though we have rang to chase it, we have been told they are very behind and that they realise his appointment is extremely over due but could not help us.

I feel that we had better care at Southampton and Derriford has been extremely poor in this.

My son now 21 is still awaiting a check-up to ensure all is ok. If they say yearly surely that is what is required after such major surgery and possible on-going monitoring it is vital to ensure young adults are checked regularly as stipulated.

I do understand that there is a major problem keeping up with the volume of people needing this type of care.

I am very disheartened that after such good care as a child that he is now having poor care.

Martyn Blackwell, Cardiology Service Manager, has responded to say:

Thank you for contacting us regarding this issue.

We do currently have a significant backlog of overdue patients waiting for the Congenital Heart Service and we are working hard to reduce all of our waiting times to access our services. Our lead clinician in this area, Dr Luisa Chichote-Hughes, will shortly be reviewing the hospital notes for each patient and the previous correspondence of all overdue patients in the service to ensure the patients that require an appointment soonest are seen in clinic first. We are also looking at how our Specialist Nurse in Congenital Heart conditions can help support patients via telephone consultation prior to a consultant review.

If you continue to have issues please contact the Congenital team direct on 01752 431176.
