My gp has made a few urgent referrals for myself which with the urgent title I expected to be within 3 weeks. Unfortunately despite being in a lot of pain my referral to the breast clinic is taking 6 weeks- after 3 weeks I had not even received a letter with an appointment and had to phone up the clinic. On top of that I now have 2 hospital appointments on that same day at the same time- so I am going to have to cancel one of them (systems not linked up?!).
Since I had a holiday booked I asked about delaying my appointment as in my eyes it can't be that urgent or serious if waiting 6 weeks to be seen- I was advised it was urgent however and not to cancel appointment. With cancer treatment having to start within 62 days,I feel waiting 6 weeks just to be seen is almost setting it up to fail. I have phoned up for any cancellation appointments but with the clinic only running 3 days a week cancellations are unlikely. This has caused a lot of unnecessary anxiety and a cancellation of a much needed holiday (one that can't be rearranged due to caring duties). More realistic timescales should be given to patient and appointments should not take 3 weeks to be given out. Of course someone's health comes first but that well needed short break being cancelled has now affected my mental health which is also not ideal.
