"Treatment of my terminally ill husband"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Community Nursing

(as a relative),

When my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he opted for home care.

From the beginning the care he has been receiving has been phenomenal.

Everyone at the Kilbirnie Medical Practice from the receptionists across the board, has been so supportive, and helpful, and have gone out of thir way to make life as comfortable as possible for us both at this very difficult time.

We mostly deal with the district nurses, who are fantastic. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them, and they go well above and beyond their duty to be helpful.

We view them more as ‘family’ than nurses. If my husband is having any difficulties our nurses won’t leave until they have resolved the issue, or if new drugs are required they will contact our GP and have it dealt with a.s.a.p.

Whilst treatment, dignity and respect are always uppermost on their minds, they manage to make us ‘forget’ how serious the situation is for a while. They are so efficient and at the same time so much fun to have around.

Every day while treating my husband they ask if I am ok too. There is no doubt the level of care and attention we receive has made the situation so much easier to bear.

In my opinion, the nurses are priceless, but don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Ileneram,

I am so sorry to hear that your husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This time is such a precious time and it is vital that care is as smooth as possible. It certainly sounds as if everything has been exemplary. While your story is humbling to read, it is wonderful to hear such a great testament to the whole team. I will take great pleasure in passing this to the Kilbirnie Medical Practice and the District Nursing Team. I know it will be delightful for them all to read about how 'phenomenal' their care has been. It really does help staff to hear when the job is well done and this seems to have surpassed that by a mile.

Thank you so much for taking time to tell us about you and your husband's experience of care at this time.

Warmest regards,

Eunice
