First let me say I am 77 years old and other than colds flu etc have never been ill, I didn't have the common children's diseases, measles, mumps etc. the exception being chicken pox at the age of 20.
A few weeks ago I thought I should have my annual check up, blood pressure, blood tests, weight. Once again I did not do this because I felt ill.
I received a letter from my doctor that I needed to repeat the blood tests a couple of days later, which I did. On a Friday afternoon, a few weeks ago, the doctor rang me at home to tell me that I needed another blood test after taking the sample she told me that oxygen was not being circulated properly and there was a problem. That blood sample was sent to Lincoln that evening.
On the following Sunday afternoon a doctor (doctor Pol) from Lincoln hospital rang me and told me I needed a bone marrow biopsy and to attend the hospital clinic on Monday the following day. I attended the and the biopsy was carried out, a further appointment was arranged to discus the findings.
My wife came along with me to hear the results, the doctor told us the were some nasty cells in my blood and that I had Leukemia, this was a bolt out of the blue, we were both gob-smacked to use a common phrase. The doctor arranged for me to have a blood transfusion on the following Friday, I received two packs. I had been getting short of breath before any of this occurred this I have since found out is a symptom of Leukemia.
The treatment for the condition was explained to us and various options available described. I have another appointment soon when the treatment will be explained in more detail and hopefully a date to start the chemotherapy.
The treatment I have received from all of the staff I have come into contact with has been exemplary at all times
THANK YOU
