I had reason to escort a couple of my family members to their appointments. One was my elderly and disabled mother. She left the surgery very distressed by her appointment and felt that the doctor did not listen to her and did not show any empathy or understanding of her medical conditions and how they are affecting her day to day living in general. She has had a major upset in her personal life as it is and has had to move away from everything that she knew, so with this transition already having an upsetting effect a GP should have listened and been slightly less aggressive. While I understand the reasons he gave my mother for the suggestions that he made, my mother has been somewhat bewildered by them.
I also escorted my teenager to an appointment and felt that again the doctor could have shown some empathy and not told a teenager who has issues with their body image as it is, that they are "on the heavier side".
Which my teenager has translated to being "fat"
"A little tact would have been nice"
