I had an emergency admission to Crathes ward in RCH in the early hours of the morning. I was seen by out of hours at reception and it was very scary, i felt very intimidated.
It was about 1am when I was taken to the ward and met the nurses, of which there were not many. A young nurse called Robin admitted me and made me feel very safe. She introduced me to her colleague Berl and told me not to be worried but they'd be checking on me and the rest of the patients every hour and they did exactly that.
I heard alarms all night and Robin sat with me to calm me down, she didnt think i needed medication and gave me with some hot tea instead. I now regularly think if i didn't need extra medicine that night when i was so worried and scared, then i dont need it at home when im not as nervous. I manage alot better without it now and I feel very proud of that. Robin and Berl saw me regularly after that and they always came in smiling and joking before the shift started. They laughed and joked with each other all the time together and made the atmosphere very friendly for the whole dorm.
I felt the lowest I had in years, and although it took me a long time to get better, being admitted scared me. The little things like robin and berl being so light hearted and cheerful helped. They are very different ages and it goes to show you cant be taught how to deal with people, some people just have that personality. The cleaner on the ward Anna also went above and beyond her role, she often helped me organise my area so that she could clean around my bed. She let me chat to her whilst she cleaned. Thank you crathes for the treatment, but thank you for the light and pleasant environment.
