"Mixed maternity care experience"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Maternity Russells Hall Hospital / Paediatrics

(as the patient),

I had my little boy at Russell’s Hall in February 2018 after going to and from numerous times after being in labour from early hours of Friday morning. I was finally told to come in to be examined and i was 8 & a half cms dilated. The midwives in the labour ward were fantastic and the surgeons when I had to have an emergency c section were amazing! And I can’t thank them enough.

But I felt that my  after care from the midwives was atrocious. To start off with I was forced to breastfeed when my milk hadn’t even come through-no formula was offered even when my little boy wasn’t getting any milk and he ended up in the children’s ward for 3 days due to jaundice. ( can midwives be told of the fact that under a c section there milk may not have come through so to offer formula to prevent a child being ill ) I was just threatened by the midwives that if he didn’t get any breast milk he would be very ill and would end up in the children’s ward which wasn’t very nice so he was best off here- when in fact the children’s ward was amazing! Surely they should big each other up anyway both under Russell’s Hall not be putting another department down!

Then on the 3rd day of me being in seeing other patients who had come in after me going home I was confused by a senior staff member who kept telling me I was day 1 patient when I was day 3- why hadn’t they checked my notes?
I was on numerous occasions confused with another patient by midwives. I was finally discharged about in the evening on day 3 after the member of staff finally checked my notes and was very shocked to see I was a day 3 patient, they said had they known they would of discharged me first- I don't understand why they didn't check my notes.

My first stage was brilliant but the after care puts me off having anymore children at Russell’s hall

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your baby boy and thank you for taking the time to share your experiences following his birth earlier this year.
