"Mum found lumps in armpit"

About: Community Services in Grampian Outpatients / Women's Day Clinic

(as a relative),

Went to doctor with a lump under armpit, given antibiotics, then referred as it never went away. Was told by gp 2-3 weeks waiting times. 6 weeks later went to ARI for a mammogram. Was told straight after to go home and await the results and another appointment which is another 6 weeks away! I asked the question “ so a possible cancer diagnosis would take best part of 3 months” to be told that 3 months is actually quite good! The lump has now grown a lot and another one the same size has appeared. Mammogram has come back clear (which I guessed) as the lumps are not in the breast. Was told compared to last mammogram it is the same....slightly worrying as my mum has never had a mammogram done before. So we now have to wait  again to get a biopsy done. So from finding the first lump to getting a biopsy done it will be going on nearly 3 months. My mum is not eating or sleeping with worry and no one can give her any idea what could actually be wrong with her!

So in 7 weeks of waiting so far the only person to look at or have a feel of these lumps is the gp who has said they don’t know what it is. Really disappointed at the waiting times at ARI for these kind of diagnostic tests!

Dear Emmas 123

I am sorry to hear your mum is experiencing lumps under her arm and having been investigated still has no clear diagnosis. I understand this can be very frustrating and a worrying time for your mum and yourself having waited for 7 weeks and still unclear.

I have discussed your concerns with Breast Services. If you wish to contact me directly I can get more details about your mum and liaise with the department to clarify your mum's situation.

My e-mail address is: Margaret.meredith@nhs.net and contact telephone number 01224 559149

Kind regards

Margaret
