My experience was unusual. I suffered for the whole time I was in hospital, mainly because I missed home and family. The health service could change some things to make the stay in hospital a bit more bearable.
One of my problems was the lack of fresh air and daylight so it was hard for me sometimes to even tell whether it was day or night as the lighting was kept on all day sometimes on the ward. The development of a few gardens or outside grounds full of nature could help resolve this problem and patients should be a bit more free to visit them even if they go outside just to smoke or socialise. As long as they have time to see more natural daylight and nature. And ward lights are only on at night unless the weather makes it really dark.
Another problem I had was trying to work out what the time and date. There was no clocks to be seen, except in the office so I did not know when to collect medicine, when visitors were expected or when meals were being prepared and sometimes I missed meals as I was not informed that they were ready. I also did not know the date unless I was lucky enough to find a newspaper with the date on and had to hope it was not an old one.
Aside from all my complaining! Overall my experience turned out positive because I got better extremely quickly and the staff were unbelievably kind and friendly. Hopefully they can take note of what I have said and change the service to improve other patients' experiences.
