"A few issues, but we can't thank the hospital enough"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Accident and emergency Musgrove Park Hospital / General surgery South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted to hospital in July 2018. From the care of the ambulance staff to the care in resus was faultless. My mum was then transferred to the surgical assessment ward, the agency nurse who assisted her just seemed unsure and nervous. They tried transferring her onto the bed but nearly pulling out the cannula. Once on the ward, a nurse who took over was just amazing, I think she was called Dawn. She was so caring, was rushed off her feet but would make time to answer any questions. On change over my mum had an agency nurse looking after her, the next morning when we arrived, the curtain was drawn around my mums bed with 3 doctors and a nurse with her. I asked the doctor what was happening, the doctor explained my mum was seriously ill and they admitted that the nurse hadn't replaced fluids in the night. With what my mum had been diagnosed with this made her even more dehydrated as fluids where important. The doctor was very apologetic and gave us a leaflet if we wanted to make a complaint. However at the time it was the last thing we wanted to do. Due to no beds on the high dependency a doctor and a nurse from the high dependency attended to my mum on the general ward, they treated her with respect and reassurance.

My mum was then transferred to the high dependency unit as was very poorly. Again the care from the staff was just incredible, each nurse was reassuring and answered any questions. The doctor did tell us her name but with everything going on I have completely forgot, again she explained to us the issues and what they where doing to treat her. The only time we witnessed poor bedside manner was from one of the surgeons, who didn't introduce himself or the junior doctors alongside. This came across harsh and judgemental.

4 days later my mum was transferred to the general ward, she had her own room and an ensuite bathroom, it was very clean and again the staff helpful.

Even though we had a couple of issues, we could see how stretched the NHS is and we can't thank them enough for saving my mums life and the care provided. Thank you.

Dear Smithy79,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and I hope your mother is recovering well.

It is always rewarding to hear stories of how our staff are delivering care and support to patients and those around them when they need it most.

We would be happy to share your story with the ambulance staff involved in this instance, however, to do so we will need some specific information. If you would like us to do this, please may I ask you to contact us on either plaudits@swast.nhs.uk or 01392 453 831 and a member of the Patient Engagement Team will be happy to help you further.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

Kind regards,

Sharifa

Dear Smithy79,

I am really sorry that there were some aspects of the care of your mum that we did not get right. I know that the Sister on the unit will of looked into the concerns about the fluids not being changed overnight as this will of been formally followed up as an incident and hopefully she will be able to offer you reassurance on her actions to ensure this does not happen again.

I am pleased that your mum then received a good level of care that helped with her recovery and that most of the staff you encountered provided good care and bedside manner.

I hope that your mum continues to recover and that the issues you have expressed have not affected your trust in the care we offer.
