"Poor timings"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Respiratory medicine

On knowing a member of my family was taken to hospital on 19/06/18 , I contacted Pilgrim Hospital it was difficult to find anything out as they did not answer the phone on many occassions, this was due to them not having his name correct. We were told he was not at that hospital but I had to check with another hospital where he was. I went to visit him on the ward, after many tests & scans he was informed he had Cancer. He was sent home after a week with co codamol for pain. He was not contacted for nearly 3 weeks absolutely no communication about what will be the treatment plan or in fact any plan. He had to go back on 3 other occasions for more tests. Then recently to see a Doctor, a different Doctor who told him he has been referred to see an Oncologist. He got the impression that he will get Chemotherapy to keep the Cancer at bay. After contacting PALS again ( who have been very good ) they contacted me back to say he should get a letter to see the Oncologist but this may take up to 2 weeks.

He went into Hospital with severe back pain, yes he has Cancer unfortunately this has spread, but to keep him waiting for so long 49 days so far is not acceptable. Surely there is another Oncologist ?? We have stated that we are prepared to travel to be seen & to get treatment. He feels totally let down & unable to organise his life

Dear anonymous

We were really saddened to hear the experience you describe at such a worrying time for your family.

There are often a number of investigations required in order to make a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan, and this is made in conjunction with a wider multidisciplinary team and the patient. This occurs according to nationally set timelines.

Without further details I am unable to comment specifically on your family member's case, and am pleased to read that you have been well supported by the PALS team.

In addition, the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service is available to you and your family in the foyer in Pilgrim Hospital for confidential advice and support.

If you require any additional information or can provide further feedback that will enable us to improve our services, please contact me directly.

Best wishes

Sarah Ward
