"This is how a hospital under pressure should run."

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Elderly medicine Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

Wards B21 and B32

Full of praise for all the staff. The trauma team were great kept me well informed about a 24 hour delay in my total hip replacement. They all introduced themselves by name from the surgeons to the students. They worked well as a team nurses physiotherapists occupational therapists and pharmacists Serco support staff.

This is how a hospital under pressure should run.

Only three minor suggestions:

First the VTE protocol ( to prevent thrombosis) was almost perfect but I think the compression stocking should be applied sooner not just post op

Second in the ensuite shower toilet room there is nowhere to place soap shower gel etc at the shower and if disabled as I was this was difficult. Could be solved with a simple attachment on shower pipe.

Third and even less important on being boarded out my dietary preferences ( menu choice) didn’t follow me so I had to accept the previous occupants choice.

Finally as someone who has an attachment to Stirling University I was proud of the numerous student nurses I met. They were v pleasant and v professional.

Dear Hush R,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us your recent experience.

I'm glad to hear that you felt well informed, and that all members of staff introduced themselves. These are core principles that I feel make all the difference. Another core principal of the NHS is teamwork, and I'm very pleased to hear that such a wide range of staff members came together in providing your care. I hope you are well on the road to recovery.

With regards to your suggestions -

I shall discuss with my colleagues best practise regarding the timing of applying compression stockings and update any local protocols accordingly.

It is a very valid point regarding the accessibility of soap etc. when showering, I'll discuss with the relevant departments, such as estates, to see if there is a solution. I appreciate the importance of independance and a small change like this can make a big difference.

My apologies for your menu choice not following you to a different ward area. I'm not sure of the process to make this happen, but will look at it over the next few days to ensure one is place and that members of staff are aware of it.

Finally, I can only echo your sentiments regarding the Student Nurses attached to NHS Forth Valley. They are a constant a source of inspiration to me with their enthusiasm, knowledge and professionalism.

I will share your feedback with the teams in B21 and B32, as well as the wider trauma team, and if there is anything you would like to discuss further then please get in touch. You can contact me via our patient relations team on 01324 566660.

Best wishes,

Patrick
