I have to admit that I was very concerned to discover that a nurse would be carrying out the flexible sigmoidoscopy. As a trained nurse myself, I have only ever known a gastroenterologist to carry out this procedure, due to the risks involved such as bowel perforation, and this was enough to make me concerned enough to consider whether to proceed with the procedure or leave.
I have witnessed shocking care at this hospital many times and generally feel that the standards of nursing care, professionalism and cleanliness are sadly lacking.
However, I’m pleased to say that the staff in the endoscopy unit who are responsible for the screening, who are based at Aintree hospital couldn’t have been nicer. They reassured me and explained everything thoroughly. The procedure itself was very competently conducted by the nurse endoscopist and I found the supporting nursing staff treated me with dignity and respect at all times.
Many thanks.
