"Rehabilitation of elderly after hospital"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Older people's healthcare

My mum was in ward 6A ,the nurses and Doctors looked after her really well ,I could not fault them ,they were very friendly and very polite ,my mum even enjoyed the food ,but and its a big but when the time came that the hospital could do no more and it was time to leave ,my mum was not very Mobile at all ,she could not get in or out of bed safely and needed help all the time and her walking was very restricted as well and she needed help for this as well ,The Social worker who's job it is to send people home and decide what help people would need said she should go home but with carers popping in 4 times a day ,I asked if she could go to a rest bite home until she got a little stronger before she went home as cares would come in the evening to see her into bed and not come back until the morning to get her up , and she would get up in the night and would have another fall, So she arranged a meeting with her self another Dr and the consultant , the consultant said they were lucky this time that my mum haven't broken a hip or smashed other bones and asked the social worker if she could push for rehabilitation ,she tried her best to get rehabilitation but the man in charge said no , he later phoned me to tell me of his decision and said mum who is 87 had very good mobility ,when I pointed out she could not get in or out of bed and the consultant had said she should not go home yet ,he said The Dr should not interfere with patients mobility and had no place to comment , Tthen he said when I saw your mum this morning she sprang out of her chair and walked around with absolutely no problems ( this was just a lie ) then he told me it didn't matter what I said he would not change his mind no matter what the consultant said to him ,my Sister was supposed to have a meeting with him but he didn't even bother to turn up and no one seemed to know where he was ,my sister phoned him twice and whoever answered the phone said they would get him to ring backb, again he didn't bother ,my mum and dad worked very hard all their lives and payed into national insurance now mum needs a little help she has been struck down by this man even after the poor social worker tried hard to get him to help after the Dr asked her to ,the man from rehabilitation has really upset me because of his treatment of my mum ,I am reporting this so that some other old person gets better treatment from him ,He has a very aggressive attitude and is very arrogant as well ,he seems to have forgotten he is dealing with very old people and needs to learn respect for them . We are pleased that you found the care so good on 6A for your mum and really appreciate you taking the time to feed this back to us.

We are sorry, however, that the discharge arrangements have been difficult.

It is beyond our control to influence the assessment criteria and outcome for further care and rehabilitation and we are sorry that you were unable to access the package you wished.

We hope that your mum is doing ok with her visits at home and staying well and safe.

If you continue to be worried then we would encourage you to speak to social care who arrange this, or to her GP who could arrange a further assessment.

Thank you again.

Jennie Negus,

Deputy Chief Nurse
