"I will never forget the way that I was treated"

About: Wythenshawe Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

I have had recurrent gastro issues for several years that have reached an unbearable level over the last 3 years. I am under the care of a wonderful consultant in the Salford Royal Gastro team who has been amazing! Recently I became particularly ill with vomiting and diarrhoea with lots of pain. My GP sent me straight to UHSM due to high no and high temp and I was admitted to ward A8.

I wanted to come home but the night registrar convinced me to stay and offered me reassurance that they would carry out Calprotectin tests (previous tests had been elevated and I was already being monitored) and scans the following day whilst I slept after finally being able to stop vomiting (cyclizine drip).

The nursing team were fantastic. The following day at 1pm a consultant came in and shouted at me to wake up, bare in mind I haven't slept properly for 7 days due to the symptoms and the cyclizine wiped me out. They then proceeded to tell me off like I was a child, They said that I had IBS and shouldn't wish to have IBD (No idea where this came from). Within 60 seconds They had left the room and said I would be sent home shortly. I was given a quick x ray and as I was leaving the ward another consultant ran after me and said I couldn't leave. I was then given enemas and had to continue for 5 days at home. This is still on going unfortunately.

I am now awaiting a sigmoidoscopy due to rectal pain and some bleeding as well as lots of pain and a rectocele. My own consultant has been extremely supportive but I will never forget the way that I was treated by the consultant at UHSM. Their bedside manner is abysmal.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Wythenshawe Site via the NHS Choices Website. We were very sorry to receive your comments and concerns about your experiences on the Acute Medical Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity for the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

First of all we would like to thank you for your kind comments regarding the nursing team on Ward A8. We were also pleased to note that the night registrar convinced you to stay so that the team could keep you in their care. We have passed your feedback on to Matron Montrose so that this can be shared with the wider team.

However, we were sorry to read about the Consultant's poor professionalism which you experienced the next day on the ward. This is unacceptable, and does not reflect Manchester NHS Foundation Trust's values and behaviours. We apologise that the first Consultant who spoke with you did not behave in the manner we would expect. Your comments have been passed onto the medical team so that they can be made aware of your experience.

It is difficult to respond in full to your concerns without more detail but please be assured that the issues you have raised have been taken seriously and shared with the nursing and medical teams at the Wythenshawe site. If you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison service on 0161 291 5600 or by emailing pls@mft.nhs.uk, quoting Reference no PO18/0100 and they will be able to discuss this with you.
