I was cleaning my motorbike chain when I caught my hand, and crushed my index and middle finger. The Scottish Ambulance Service attended and took me to QUEH A&E; where I was x-rayed, ring blocked and limitedly cleaned before being admitted to Ward 10C (orthopaedics). The next day my fingers were washed out, debrided and wired under general anaesthetic. I had hoped to be home later the same day, but it was recommended that I stay in until the next morning for extra IV antibiotics.
My care was excellent, from my own doorstep to the minute I was discharged. I was promptly x-rayed on arrival, not left waiting in pain -- which by that point was pretty significant -- and admitted quickly, despite it being a busy day which had seen a substantial issue with the DECT phones.
The ward staff were brilliant- attentive, well-informed and above all caring. As a small illustration: sometimes there are delays with discharge- getting medications, the discharge letter written or a follow-up appointment ready; in my case they were so well-organised I was away *before* the time they had estimated, despite it being another busy day. They even let me scarf some lunch quickly before leaving!
If, perish the thought, one of my relatives had to receive care from QUEH and 10C I would be very confident that they were in great hands.
"Care was excellent"
