"Smoking at Hospital Doors."

About: Crosshouse Hospital University Hospital Ayr

(as the patient),

Hello again. Recently I was going for appointment at Crosshouse Hospital. Once again people were standing outside smoking some in their hospital night clothes. This must be very unhygienic when they go back to the ward's. The same at Ayr Hospital. I have a bad chest and scarring on the lungs. Why have I got to go thru a smoke screen to see a Dr. Please move them.

With thanks

Dear Lees09

While not responsible for Ayr or Crosshouse Hospital sites I am part of a working group in NHS Ayrshire and Arran that aims to support reduction or cessation of smoking and the issue of smoking at the hospital doors has been a recurring issue.

All persons admitted in to inpatient care should be asked if they are smokers and advice/support offered to reduce or cease smoking through our smoking cessation officers within the Public Health Department. Nicotine Replacement Therapy and support/advice is readily available.

We are aware that despite this service users and visitors continue to smoke at the entrance to the hospitals despite signage and staff discouraging them from doing so.

Later this year legislation will come into effect that will make it an offence for anyone smoking within 15 metres of a health premises - colleagues from Environmental Health will be able to issue 'on the spot' fines to persons breaching this legislation which hopefully will reinforce the message that smoking at hospital entrances is not acceptable.

Dear Mr Lauder

Thank you for your reply regarding SMOKING at Hospital Doors ect. Once again I have witnessed Smoking in the door way at Ayrshire Central Hospital. I don't think people should be allowed to leave A Ward in there Nightwear to Stand outside and Smoke outside then go into a ward. What Germs are being taking into the ward.

Your Sincerely

Lees09
