My father had cataract surgery this morning. Unfortunately it was not successful. This didn't come as a complete surprise as we had been warned of a potential complication.
My frustration is with how my father, an 85 year old, was treated. I explained to the surgeon that he was unlikely to be able to hear her, particularly with the face mask on. Her response was pretty much this is how it is and she "could shout".Why are such services not using face masks with a clear panel? These allow Deaf and hard of hearing people to access some information from lip reading.Deaf people need hearing people to make adjustments, take more time, write things down and if relatives are there for support use them. There was a feeling of being on a 'conveyor belt'. After the operation I was told I could join my father, when I asked him if he understood what the surgeon had said they interrupted and said yes everything had been explained to him. My father has recently been through a traumatic injury and currently is unable to retain information. Prior to the operation I rang the hospital and spoke to the nurse in charge and explained this. So we are now left with the information that we must go to Ashford hospital on Monday but we don't know why. My father thinks he was told but cannot remember what the surgeon said.
