"Difficulty in getting appointments,..."

About: Guiseley and Yeadon Medical Practice

It is increasingly difficult for working people to see a doctor as employers are not always supportive of giving time off for an employee to sit in a waiting room for usually an hour plus to be seen. A whole morning can be lost in a walk-in clinic if you live some way from your place of work.

I have recently been forced into A&E as no appointments were available and was seen within 20 minutes.

I feel that the appointments would be better throughout the day and the walk in surgery at the end.

This allows workers to have a better idea of the time scale.

It is also almost impossible to see the same doctor treatment has begun with, lack of continuity seems to be the norm.

I also feel that Guiseley surgery is underused - not everyone has the means to get to Yeadon.

I appreciate that there has been significant building in recent years which puts a strain on services but you must be able to have some control on the number of patients you have on your books.

Many thanks for your comments.

As a practice, we are always conscious of appointment availability and we review on a regular basis.

We do offer appointments that open up throughout the week and these are also available on-line as well as the walk in surgery

The walk in surgery was originally offered for those that felt their problem would not wait but unfortunately due to a lack of pre-bookable appointments this has meant opening it up to everyone which has proved very popular with patients.

A recent week long survey of all patients attending the practice showed that 63% of patients seeing us that week, were in favour of the walk in service.

However, we are trying our best with limited resources and no system is perfect.

The number of GP,s taken to resource the walk in clinic and support the number of patients it sees obviously impacts on the number of pre bookable appointments and also the number of clinics offered at our Guiseley surgery.

Unfortunately we are unable to limit the number of patients registered as we would have to apply to NHS England to close our list and as you are aware there are now 400 plus new homes in the Guiseley area that simply did not exist three years ago which has further impacted on our resources but these people have a right to access our services.

I am aware that this is not perfect and we will continue to review but please get in touch as we are always happy to discuss ideas and solutions.

Jane Turner

Practice Manager.
