"Maternity assessment unit"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary / Maternity care

I came in tonight to the maternity assessment unit for reduced fetal movement I tried phoning before I went but no answer after 4 times of trying then when I got seen the midwife told me I didn’t really need to be here as it’s not urgent and at 27 weeks baby is still small! I was just so surprised they could make you feel like you have committed a crime because your worried about your baby! The worst part they were reading through my notes and I could hear them say well she was only in a few weeks ago why does she need to come back! Makes me feel so ashamed to even be concerned about my baby! Disgusted With how they speak to you I really especially as a first time mum it really puts you of going back if you have the same problem again! Staff need to learn manners.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on our Maternity Services at the RVI, we are very sorry to learn that you did not receive the standard of care expected when you recently attended the Maternity Assessment Unit. We wish to apologise if you were unable to get through to the department via telephone, this is most unusual but if all staff are busy attending patients there can sometimes be a delay in answering.

You were correct to contact us as we always recommend that parents who have noticed a change in their baby’s movements report this to their midwife, if their pregnancy is less than 24 weeks the midwife can arrange to see them. If their pregnancy is beyond 24 weeks we would recommend contacting the Maternity Assessment Unit. It is often necessary that women attend the MAU for further assessment and the unit is open 24 hours for assessment, advice, guidance and support.

We wish to review your care experiences and the additional comments you stated were made by staff and we would like to discuss your personal circumstances further. Can we please request that you contact Mrs Elaine Blair, Head of Midwifery via Telephone on 0191 2825666. We can look into this matter with you further. Please be assured this will be dealt with sensitively and in confidence.

Once again we apologise that the care you received was not of the high standard we wish to provide and thank you for bringing this to our attention. Should you have any concerns relating to your pregnancy please feel free to contact the MAU anytime.
