"Poor Care in the Royal Gwent"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital

(as a relative),

My life partner was in the Royal Gwent between early Oct and late November  2016  He received appalling care.   A serious cancer diagnosis was missed.   He had no chair to sit in for 2 weeks so was effectively bed ridden ....but had no choice.   There were nurses standing around chatting when he was needing help.  Buzzers were placed on ledges so he could not reach and he was left without oxygen.   In my experience the staff were bullying.     He survived thankfully only to have another admission in Sept 2017 ..and died within 9 days of what we think was extreme neglect or something worse....it is still being investigated and we have notified the necessary authorities.     He was dressed in nappies for 5 days and I have no idea why.  It needs an enquiry and we are pushing for this to happen.

Firstly, please may we take this opportunity to thank you for posting.

We are very sorry to hear of your recent experience. This is not the standard of care the Health Board aims to deliver.

If you would like to speak to someone about this, or wish to make a formal complaint, please contact the Concerns Team by telephoning the Customer Contact Centre on 01495 745656 or if you prefer via email at Puttingthingsright.ABHB@wales.nhs.uk.

Update posted by kirstylakin (a relative)

I have already made a formal complaint last October 2017, the acknowledgement was sent to an address I had never lived in. My status as life partner was doubted, staff were rude and unhelpful. The CEO can never reply to emails and I am afraid communication skills are sadly lacking.

I have now received a report which I collected and it was handed to me ( I could have been anyone ) no checks. So much for Data Protection! I have a proposed meeting with the Health Board but answers should have been delivered long ago... I have had to involve my AM and an MP. None of this should ever have happened, it was an experience which was shocking.

The Health Board is aware of the issues that have been raised which are subject to the formal complaints process and are being addressed accordingly.
