"Going into hospital to have my third baby."

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I went into be induced to have my third baby. I have 2 young other children aged 1 and 3. I had my baby at 10pm and the following day both my girls were dying to see me as the hadn’t seen there mum. My husband was bringing them over to see me and meet their new sister.

I mentioned this to the midwife who was looking after me. To be then told they were not allowed into see me. So I offered to use the small room at the end of the ward for a quick time to see my children. They weren’t overly happy and told me I couldn’t use the room. My husband never received my text to say he couldn’t bring the girls in so he arrived with them! They only stayed 10 mins and he took them away. But I then felt very awkward about the whole situation and couldn’t relax.

I was on edge and felt the midwife couldn’t look me in the eye after that when they come to discharge me. Previously when I was in hospital having my second baby it was never a problem for my first daughter to come see me.

Their manner wasnt what a midwife should be. After speaking to other midwives I have been told this information was wrong? The other staff that looked after me really made my time there enjoyable and made me feel at ease about having another baby! Especially the midwife and the student midwife that looked after me that day I was induced.

Dear Belle20,

I am very sorry this is the experience you have had whilst in our care. This is not what we would wish for any of our families and I wonder if you would be willing to chat with me so I can address this.

Thank you for mentioning the midwives and the student nurse who cared for you and made your stay enjoyable.

Please can you contact Susan Cowe, Complaints Officer on 01896 826714.

Best wishes

Nicky Berry

Associate Director of Nursing & Head of Midwifery

Dear Belle20

Thank you for taking the time to talk to me on the phone to discuss your experience when you attended the Borders General Hospital to have your third baby. We agreed to take forward a complaint to ensure that your concerns were appropriately addressed.

I was pleased to hear from Shona the Clinical Manager for Women & Children that she has spoken with you today and been able to provide you with the information you requested on what our visiting policy was.

I understand that Shona informed you that the Senior Charge Midwife for Ward 17 has spoken with all her staff to reiterate our visiting policy to ensure this experience is not repeated.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your story which has allowed us to learn from your experience and improve things for families using our services in the future.

I hope you are continuing to settle in well at home with your three children.

Best wishes,

Karen
