"Personal care needs unmet"

About: Borders General Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted to ward 4 for a planned procedure to have a PEG tube fitted. She has advanced progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) which has left her unable to communicate or do anything for herself.

She was a patient for 5 days and in this time was not showered, hair left unwashed and did not have her teeth cleaned. This was only rectified after I complained to the nurse in charge. This is a very undignified way to treat someone and deprives them of their basic needs in my opinion.

Also, she was to be discharged and was ready to go with medication and discharge letter at 2pm. She was not picked up by patient transport until after 9pm at night! A vulnerable care home resident. I understand the crew had come from the Fife area.

Dear Kittycay03

I was sad and disappointed to read your story.

The care you described your mum received whilst in WD4 falls well below the standard that I would expect for patients in our care. I will discuss this with the Nurse in Charge of WD4, to investigate the care you describe.

If you feel able I would really appreciate if you would contact myself directly, so that we could discuss both your and your mums experience.

Hi Kittycat03

I too am distressed to hear about your mother's experience while within our care. The level of care you describe is simply not good enough and I would like to apologise to you and your mother for letting you down. I would like to assure you that your feedback is being taken seriously and has been shared with the ward team. We will use your feedback to learn from your mother's time with us.

I would urge you to take Jamie up on his offer of a discussion so that we can use this experience to avoid this happening in future.

Best wishes

Gareth
