"Short staffed ward"

As a student nurse on this ward I have had an amazing opportunity to learn from some truly caring and knowledgeable nurses. I have been able to learn skills in therapeutic interactions and risk assessment which I know will be invaluable to me once I am qualified.

I am concerned, however, that this ward is extremely short staffed on a regular basis and has a high usage of temporary staffing which has impacted on patients care and does not support the already high level of activity on the ward. This has meant that as a student I have received limited mentor contact and am concerned that I have frequently been put in situations that have had a negative impact on my supernumerary status. I know the ward management team are aware of these issues and are working hard to resolve them but until the issues are resolved I worry about the safety and learning environment of future students.
