"Their system of care is wonderful"

About: Strathcarron Hospice / In-Patient Unit

(as a service user),

This is to do with my wife who passed away in January after being admitted to Strathcarron Hospice on Boxing day following a short stay in FVRH.

What a blessing it was not only for her but also for the family to know that in their hours of need Strathcarron staff were there throughout the few short days left for my wife to care, respect and look after all her needs and to help the family emotionally thru a distressing time.

What selflessness, dare I say love and compassion that ALL members of staff showed us and my wife passed pain free, comfortable and no fear.

The atmosphere in this hospice is so quiet, relaxed and homely that it helps with the carers to feel that the right thing was done to ease the work load and to take the burden when the going gets too tough for 1 person to handle.

Their system of care is wonderful and to realise that it is a charity relying on donations makes it all the more unbelievable - just one big great GOOD SAMARATIN.

My and my families thanks to all at Strathcarron Hospice

Good morning to you and thank you for your very positive feedback regarding the care you all received in the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit.

Condolences to you and your family as you are still very recently bereaved – it makes it more special to us that you have found time in these early stages of your bereavement to post your story on Care Opinion.

We are very reassured to know that the care that ‘we’ (all members of the multi-disciplinary team) strive to provide to patients and their families, has indeed been realised for yourselves. It is positive to also note that it was not only the care you all received but that the atmosphere of the Hospice and the environment all played a part in easing the distress that you had been feeling – it sounds like ‘the whole package’ was what helped you all through that short phase of your wife’s illness.

It will be very helpful am sure, to other patients and family members who are anxious about the thought of coming into the Unit to read this story. I hope your story helps them as well as letting the Hospice staff know that they have supported you so well as a family – and at a very difficult time in your lives.

You have noted that we are a charity and that is absolutely correct. Fundraising is vital and the Hospice Team of course extends beyond the care giving staff that most people see across our different care settings. We have a small but fantastic fundraising team working very hard on raising funds to enable our care to continue. Without the amazing support of the communities we serve, none of our Hospice care would be possible, so we are very appreciative of positive stories to help promote those fundraising efforts.

Thank you once again for sharing your story – I can now share it with the wider team.

Regards

Lesley
