"Operation cancelled 4th time"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Accident and emergency Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics University Hospital Lewisham / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Yesterday I got the phone call I had been expecting to tell me my 4th scheduled surgery was cancelled, I could not stop crying.

I fell down stairs last year and broke my left wrist and left leg where the bone meets the knee, In a wheelchair and non weight bearing for 3 months and finally out of wheelchair and now only mobile with crutches almost a year later. After physio didn't help my leg, I had a CT scan and was referred toward the end of last year October for urgent surgery to remove the pin and have an arthroscopy with either a new pin with a bone graft or possibly will need a new knee, I am in my mid 50s.

I cannot bend or fully straighten my leg and am in pain a lot of the time, Surgery scheduled twice for late last year and the last time I actually was in gown in Ward waiting and then was cancelled. New date earlier this year, cancelled day before and now a few days away... cancelled yesterday. I have a new date a few months away which will be exactly one year on from my accident. And who knows if that will happen? It's now 18 weeks on from my urgent referral and I am seriously worried that the delay will cause permanent damage to my leg.

In the meantime I cannot walk, cannot work and have been put on anti-depressants as I can see no end to this.

I was very saddened to read your comments and I cannot begin to understand how frustrating and upsetting this must be for you.

The local health system presently remains under intense pressure and we are doing everything we can to create capacity for operations and procedures. I am truly very sorry for these delays.

If you would like your concerns investigated further and receive a formal response please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) team at the University Hospital Lewisham 020 8333 3355. This will enable the Service Manager and Trauma Co-ordinator to look into your case immediately.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.

Kind regards

Phil Briggs

Head of Nursing, Surgery

Update posted by cherrybaby (a service user)

I complained to PALS after my operation was cancelled the third time, and was contacted by a Trauma and Orthopedic manager who claimed I would have high priority for the most recent surgery, that clearly didnt happen and no capacity has been made for my surgery within the system. I have now made a formal complaint and will go to the Ombudsman if necessary
