Came in as a query cauda equina. Post catheter showed this not to be the case, just extreme sciatica pain with muscle spasms, which is when I feel staff lost interest.
Pain management plan was put in place, and more or less works providing I don't move or walk! I can't weight bare after 6 steps, haven't slept for two nights due to mismanaged pain, and I have had no investigations (other than initial bladder scan). I'm not sure who my Consultant is although I know they introduced themselves to me on a very busy and loud ward whilst I was on morphine. I've asked three times now to see someone about my current pain plan to revise it. Some of the staff have been really lovely and caring, but on the whole I've felt like a nuisance and have had to chase the majority of my doses and information regarding when I'm seeing someone from my specialty (not has been the answer!). Because of my foot & leg getting worse I'm insisting on seeing the physio for a stairs test before being discharged much to staffs' dissaproval. I've been moved wards twice and both times have been a specialty outlier - now a spinal patient on a stroke unit. I've also triggered a mixed sex accommodation breach. One dose of meds was mixed up with one of the ladies who moved with me, luckily we noticed and switched. The questions I have that remain unanswered is: WHY do I have sciatica and why did the pain suddenly get infinitely worse to the point I couldn't urinate or stand? Will the pain ever go?! I myself am an NHS professional and know first hand how difficult it is for a Trust to manage winter pressures, and this experience has definitely shown me how stretched staff are (I think they are at breaking point - there are too few of them!), but I am wondering if my current situation and feelings of being a nuisance is common amongst patients on the other side of the fence?
"Current inpatient - WHY am I in pain?"
