"Brilliant Care and Service"

About: Isle of Wight Ambulance Service St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

(as the patient),

I recently spent 10 days in St Mary’s Hospital of which I had to have an urgent total hip replacement. I continue to be extremely grateful to all that attended to me during my stay and I would like to express how pleased I am with both the staff and the way that I was treated overall. First of all, I arrived at St Mary’s in an ambulance and I would like to say that the two members of staff who aided me on the way were very comforting as obviously I was in a lot of pain, and along with pain relief, I also received a lot of reassurance which was definitely needed as I was rather worried at the time. Soon after I arrived, I was seen by Mr Gardiner and Mr Stoneham of which they explained to me that I would need an emergency hip replacement, this was quickly fitted in to their very busy schedule which I was understandably thankful for. Upon being taken down to theatre when the time came, the theatre staff and team excelled in putting my mind at rest. I wasn’t overly worried about the operation as I had been through a similar ordeal before but it was comforting to know that the staff were willing to provide reassurance and it was definitely greatly appreciated.

After being transferred to the Alverstone Ward following on from the surgery, I was treated in the most professional way and I was very pleased with how lovely and friendly, as well as helpful all of the Nursing Staff were, in particular; Annette, Sonja, Glades, Bob, Dan, Sim Chris and Darnell. They were all very cheerful as well which went a long way in terms of recovery and essentially made my recovery time in the ward a lot easier. They all seemed to truly care about my wellbeing and checked on how I was recovering many times per day essentially making sure that I was doing okay, asked if I needed anything and overall were just there at every turn. Other members of staff that helped in my recovery such as; Olive, Carol, Linda, Gary, Lynsy and Darnell were also hardworking and positive just like the rest of the staff. The hard working cleaner Iryna was very courteous, she cleaned my room thoroughly everyday and when I was asleep she took extra care to not wake me up as I needed my sleep after the operation. Lastly, the two Occupational Therapists arranged for everything to be picked up from the Red Cross so that I could have a comfortable recovery at home and also thank you to the Physiotherapists who gave me exercises to aid in my recuperation. Not forgetting also the lovely food and the woman who provided me with tea who was also a wonderful addition to the Hospital Staff.

Mr Gardner, Mr Stoneham and all of the staff that I encountered were very pleasant and again, I was and continue to be eternally grateful that they were there to assist me with everything that I needed during my recovery after my hip operation. Thank you!
